Is Hip Replacement Major Surgery?
As we age, the bones and joints around our hips can become worn down and damaged. When cartilage wears away, the bones begin to rub against each other. This is a common issues seen in seniors and can cause your bones to become stiff and painful.
Total hip replacement is a major surgery, but is sometimes necessary. The damaged joint is replaced with an artificial joint. The type of hip replacement will depend on each individual’s situation.
Total Hip Replacement
All parts of the hip joint and socket is replaced with prosthetics. This includes damaged cartilage. The socket is replaced with metal and the joint is replaced with plastic or ceramic. This allows for the hip joint to move freely and smoothly again.
Partial Hip Replacement
Only the femoral ball and thigh bone is replaced with a prosthetic. Unlike total hip replacement, the hip bone socket remains.
Posterior and Anterior Hip Replacement
These procedures are mildly invasive. Small incisions are made and the hip is repaired without damage to muscles and tendons. Recovery for these are usually a day.
Recovery From Hip Surgery
It can take anywhere from a few days to several months to recover from this surgery, depending on what type was performed. Seniors are generally more compromised when it comes to major surgery and recovery, so expect a longer recovery time. Your loved one may need extra help with every day activities during their recovery period. Hiring a caregiver is a good idea to ensure that your senior loved one has an easy recovery in the comfort of their own home.
