Heart Disease can refer to several conditions. The most common heart disease ion the United State is called Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) which affects blood flow into the heart. Decreased blood flow can trigger a heart attack.
What is an Echocardiogram?
This is a test that uses ultrasound to see how your heart muscle and valves are working. Your doctor may use this test to check for signs of heart disease. There are 4 types of echocardiogram tests that your doctor may use.
- Transthoracic
This is the most standard test and is like an X-Ray. A transducer sends high-frequency sound waves that bounce off your heart, creating an image. Changes in the sound waves can detect the speed and direction of blood flow.
- Transesophageal
This one is a little more invasive as the transducer will be placed down your throat into your chest. It gives a clearer picture as it’s closer to your heart.
- Stress Test
This is done while you are on a treadmill or stationary bike. This is used to see how your heart is working under stressful conditions. It can also show a lack of blood flow that may not come up on other tests. For those who can’t do physical exercise, you’ll be given a drug that makes your heart feel like it’s working hard. The testing can be done the same way.
- Intravascular Ultrasound
The transducer is placed directly into your blood vessels through a catheter in your groin. This can take pictures of the interiors of your blood arteries to check for issues.
What Can Echocardiogram Tests Show?
Doctors can see structural issues such as an enlarged heart, thick ventricles, weakened heart muscles, problems with the valves, defects, blood clots, tumors, and blood flow.
It’s possible that some heart conditions can be missed with Echocardiogram test. If you have heart issues or may be at risk of heart issues, your doctor will likely order an array of tests to determine the cause.
