Herbs to Help Dementia

by | Aug 1, 2021 | Health/Wellness

There is no cure for dementia, but there are some herbs out there that can help with memory and cognitive function.

Please note that natural remedies should never replace medication without the consent of your doctor. Please consult with your doctor before using any of these herbs in case they may cause chemical reactions with your medication.

Turmeric

Turmeric is great for helping with the common cold, weight loss, and even acne. It has anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties as well. Recent studies have shown a link between inflammation in the brain and Alzheimer’s Disease, so its natural anti-inflammatory properties could be a benefit.

Ginko Biloba

The leaves of this tree can be ground to be used in supplements. The Alzheimer’s Society found during a 1976 clinical trial that the use of ginko biloba improved memory in dementia patients.

Rosemary

Rosemary also contains natural anti-inflammatory properties and is another herb that aids in memory. A controlled study showed that it acted similar to Alzheimer’s medications and did indeed promote memory and cognitive function.

Sage

Sage has been found to boost the immune system, and help with behavior and attention issues. It also inhibits an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase from breaking down acetylcholine in the brain. Those who suffer from dementia have low amounts of acetylcholine.
