For those that aren’t eligible for benefits through the state, talk to an agent to find a comparable private plan that covers you and your parents as dependents. Those who have parents who need care at home can also opt for family insurance that provides protection for immediate family members.

Family leisure health insurance is similar to individual health insurance in terms of insurance cover. These policies offer the same basic health benefits as other plans, but the monthly premium is much lower than individual health insurance coverage in terms of coverage and benefits. Sometimes you can end up with health insurance that comes with a lower premium, but your benefits can be affected.

Buying an independent health plan for your family is a must, even if you have group insurance. When you choose to have health insurance for the whole family, check that the health plans meet the requirements of each member.

MediCare

This government covered plan consists of Part A for hospital care, hospice, etc. and Part B which is physician visits and preventative care. MediCare Part D offers prescriptions, vision, dental, and hearing services are included in some Advantage plans.

The qualifications for MediCare is to be a US resident or citizen for 5 years and have paid into social security for at least 10 years. Seniors are automatically enrolled into MediCare once they start receiving social security payments. If your parent is 65 but not receiving social security payments, they can still enroll as long as they aren’t covered by any employer or union plans.

Affordable Care Act

If your parents aren’t eligible for MediCare, check your local state exchange for government covered plans. You can find plans that range from low-cost to free.

Employer Insurance

If your parent is still working after the age of 65, they may have a retiree health benefit. If they do, they should enroll in MediCare part A or B.

Determining Cost

Understand what your or your parents’ out-of-pocket expenses might be with these factors:

  • Monthly premium
  • Copayment
  • Deductible
  • Coinsurance

Look for a long-term perspective and one that covers all of your parents’ health care costs, including the cost of follow-up care. National health insurance programs can help your family obtain health insurance at little or no cost by paying for benefits that may not be covered by other health insurance plans. The care of an elderly person without health insurance provides coverage for seniors insured by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
